Coccidia

Coccidiosis is caused by a parasitic infection from a protozoan called coccidia. It is most commonly found in the intestinal tract of puppies and kittens, but not exclusively. Coccidia is contracted by coming into contact with feces from another infected animal or can be caused by stress. Symptoms can include, but not limited to, watery, mucous-like diarrhea that can progress to bloody diarrhea, and/or lethargy. Coccidiosis can lead to death if left untreated; course of treatment is different of that of intestinal parasitic deworming. Be sure to contact All Animal Clinic if you think your new puppy or kitten (or others) may have coccidia.
